Fusion-3

John Andrews, Wendy Fraser, Kylie Rose-McLean

Fusion 3' March 26th - April 19th New paintings by John Andrews, photographs by Wendy Fraser and ceramic work by guest artist Kylie Rose-McLean. Opening Night Saturday March 28th at 6pm. Please come along. An exciting new exhibition of works by local photographer Wendy Fraser who has combined with Walcha's John Andrews - a talented abstract and traditional landscape painter - and guest ceramic artist Kylie Rose McLean from the Central Coast. This is Wendy and John's second collaboration, following on from their successes in Divergent Abstractions in 2012. Please feel free to join Wendy, John, and Kylie Rose at Gloucester Art Gallery in Denison Street for wine and nibbles at 6 pm on Saturday 28 March. The gallery is open from 10 am to 4 pm Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays/ from 10 am to 1 pm on Sundays and Easter Monday. Wendy's new photographs are a continuation of the Fourth Dimension Series, which explores photography as a documentary medium. Images are taken hand-held, using a 35mm film camera, in industrial areas, railway tunnels and city laneways. The images are, however, abstract and colourful compositions - often with textures and tags which suggest something of ownership or the past. The photographs have been taken in Gloucester and Port Macquarie, along with Newtown in Sydney's inner south west - a terrific host for the layered surfaces which feature in many of the new works. This is Wendy's fourth exhibition at the Gloucester Gallery. The inspiration for John's completely new body of work has been the stunning tall trees in wet sclerophyll forests near Gloucester, plus a few foggy mornings. John uses a semi-abstract format in many of his paintings, while exploring the changes in light in tree canopies, and on the trunks and limbs. John has used acrylics on linen canvas to convey flickering light on real subjects with filmstrip impressions. Other paintings are on cotton and linen canvases, and explore the texture of paint as a way of expressing the huge variations within each colour. Others still have subject matters at variance with the above, and are presented in more traditional format - with quirky little things to draw your eye in.

Eclectic Mix

David Hjorth

Eclectic Mix' at the Gloucester Gallery from next Thursday 23rd April. David is a quietly spoken retired public servant who started painting water colours in 1977 but took a long break to raise a family and pursue a career. He took up painting again two years ago and now works with acrylics and oils. His first exhibition 'Eclectic Mix' will feature 33 paintings from throughout his career as well as some handmade jewellery. "I am an artist who does not like to inhabit a closely circumscribed niche," Mr Hjorth said. "I like a broader conceptual context, which produces diversity of form and expression. "I believe that any form of art is open to the interpretation of the viewer. "We all see something different, that is why most of my works have no titles. This, I believe, gives the viewer a choice to open their mind to whatever it is they see and give a work its own title." Mr Hjorth said he looked back on his time working with water colours fondly, but using more modern techniques provided more scope. "Water colour was the first medium I worked with. I still enjoy the medium," he said. "However, over the years I have found there is no need to search, as inspiration is everywhere and working in oils and acrylics has allowed me to express this more freely." 'Eclectic Mix' opens at the Gloucester Gallery on Thursday April 23rd and runs until May 18.

Double Take

Rachel Saunders

First inspired to experiment with the photographic technique of multiple exposure when she accidentally captured a double exposure on black & white film over 20 years ago, Rachel was fascinated by the mystery in the resulting image. In combining photographs from often opposing situations & places, Rachel creates a visual intricacy that can resemble the designs and textures of fabric and she invites the viewer to use their imagination to see the many & varied stories each image conjures. There is a painterly quality to these photographs, some with the complexity of content, spiritual intonation and tonal quality reminiscent of Renaissance & Impressionist paintings. The interplay of light through the layers creates a depth and luminosity not easily portrayed in a single capture.
