Ethereal acoustic music by Abhaya Sky and Hidden Strings

Ethereal acoustic music by Abhaya Sky and Hidden Strings Abhaya Sky Born of mystical vision and a restless sense for the bittersweet aesthetic, Australian composer and performer Christopher Sutherland weaves gentle and powerful worlds of sound and story. Reaching ever upward, yet grounded in a tender embrace of the human frame, Abhaya Sky seeks to create in music a sanctuary for all beings. Currently performing songs from his upcoming debut album Dreamfolk, Abhaya Sky will share an intimate collection of new music for guitar and voice, supported by cellist Naomi Dart. Hidden Strings Take a moment to step outside of time… Somewhere between a concert and a sound healing, Hidden Strings create improvised musical meditations of cello and guitar that inspire subtle dream states and deep relaxation. You may take the experience however you wish, whether sitting, lying down or moving gently. You could even do some knitting. This is a perfect opportunity for those that find it difficult meditate or switch off. Simply turn up and float away.

Photography Workshop With Scott Calvin

Anyone interested in learning a few tricks of the photography trade ahead of the 2022 Pix from the Stix photography competition is encouraged to take part in a two-hour workshop. Anyone interested in learning a few tricks of the photography trade ahead of the 2022 Pix from the Stix photography competition is encouraged to take part in a two-hour workshop. This year's judge, long-time Manning River Times photographer and TAFE photography teacher, Scott Calvin, is coming to Gloucester ahead of the competition to help support any aspiring or experienced photographers. Thanks to the support of the Gloucester School of Arts, Scott will be running the workshop at the Gloucester Citizens Centre on Sunday, May 15 from 5pm to 7pm. "I have taught thousands of people how to take better photos," Scott said. "This is just another chance to help people who are interested in knowing what makes a great shot." Scott plans to demonstrate a range of techniques that he's employed over his vast career as a professional photographer. Before returning to his hometown of Taree, Scott worked in portrait studios, photographed weddings, and snapped many magazine shoots. Since returning to the Manning around 30 years ago, he's been working for the Manning River Times. This has seen him take on a whole new range of photography, adding race-paced events and sport to his repertoire, snapping everything from footy matches to high-speed boat racing. He has plenty of experience photographing festivals and parades in all kinds of weather and lighting conditions. And he's no stranger to judging photography competitions. His diverse experience is what drew the 2022 Pix from the Stix committee to look at inviting him to be a judge. As the competition has such a big range of categories, including capturing cultural activities, working without colour, and inspiring creativity in a not-so-normal photo, Scott seemed like the perfect fit. The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about the art of taking a photograph, not just those looking to enter the competition. Cost of the workshop is $10 for non-members and $5 for GACCI members with a $5 rebate for any members who enter the competition. Memberships can be purchased at the time of securing a spot in the workshop. Bookings can be made via trybooking at https://www.trybooking.com/BYUPI While the Pix committee is still in the process of working out the final details of the 2022 competition, they have revealed that it is undergoing a reboot. Entries are due to open in early May with the exhibition in Gloucester Gallery to be held in late August and early September. Pix from the Stix is an initiative of the Gloucester Arts and Cultural Council Inc (GACCI). For more information, email pix@gloucester-arts.com.au. Susan Haschek, Suzie Oldfield, Anne Grant

Susie Oldfield Is a practicing multi-media artist from Mid North coast who is developing her approach to 3D works using materials from her small property and inspiration that surrounds her in the natural environment. Also combining ceramics with fibre and found objects and treasures. Susie has won awards in the Mid North Coast area for drawing, printmaking and sculptural works. After a successful exhibition – Colour and Line -with 18 artists at The Artspace Urunga, she is looking further afield to exhibit her work. She has exhibited her contemporary baskets with 19 other baskets makers(local and International) at Gallery 76 (Embroiderers Guild NSW) in Sydney in March 2021. Her projection for 2022, after completion of the Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts in 2021 is to exhibit further and develop her creative industries through offering workshops in Textile and Fibre work. She been using handmade fibre work in conjunction her ceramic pieces and intends to further investigate mixed media in her artistic practice.

Susan Haschek My intention as an artist is to express a deep sense of belonging to, and affection for, the local area where I have lived most of my life. My family; were pioneers in the local areas of Tuncurry, Nabiac and Gloucester. I am fascinated by the resources these families exploited to survive and eventually prosper. Themes dealing with Fishing, oyster cultivation, farming and forestry are featured in my artworks. I am curious about the relationships between people and the places they inhabit, and how natural elements effect people and their lives. What do these relationships look like? What does it look like from an aerial viewpoint or oblique viewpoints? What does water look like from above? Maps?
Which creatures live in and around that water, that piece of bushland? These ideas and concepts have appeared in my artworks on a regular basis. My work is never far from home, physically or emotionally.

Anne Grant My work is based on traditional printmaking techniques which are worked into with various other mediums including watercolour, acrylic and oil paints. I also create pen and ink drawings and ceramic sculptures. After a lifetime of being a city-dweller I now live in the sleepy village of Smiths Lakes on the mid coast of NSW. The daily act of walking my dog either leads me to the lake, a coastal lagoon bounded from the ocean by sand dunes, or to Blueys Beach. Slowly the natural environment has woven its way into my awareness, and I now appreciate the landscape with an enquiring and grateful mind. These artworks reflect the littoral landscapes of the lakeshore and seashore– the intersection of land and water. The colours and textures reflect the changing light as the seasons progress from the depth of winter to high summer.
Much of my working life was as a technical draftsperson in Sydney and subsequently as an engineering recruitment consultant in Perth.
I am currently studying towards a Bachelor of Creative Practice – Visual Art at TAFE & Hunter Street Art School in Newcastle.
It is my great pleasure to now live in this beautiful region and pursue my love of art.

Gloucester Artists

Members of the Gloucester Art Society once again showcase their new work in a range of mediums.

The Society was formed in the early 1960’s and has been active continuously since when 29 members had their first exhibition in the Gloucester RSL, then on Church Street, with a 1st prize awarded by Gloucester Shire Council for five pounds!

Membership is currently strong and has remained fairly constant over the years, with the group meeting weekly (until COVID-19 interrupted things) with quarterly workshops being held by visiting artists. These workshops are held in the School of Arts workroom above the Gloucester Gallery.

The Society has enjoyed exhibiting annually in the Gloucester Gallery since its establishment by GACCI in the School of Arts building in 1999.

Entries are closed for 2022.

Winners will be announced at the exhibition opening on Friday, August 19 from 7-9pm.

GROUNDED

GROUNDED

Rachel Melchers

In this exhibition Rachel Melchers explores our connection with the earth and the elements. How the idea of being grounded refers literally to our physical contact with the earth, but how that connection manifests in the centring and balancing of our being.

Rachel’s immerses herself in the landscape to create works that combine abstract layers with fine detail to give us an appreciation of the wonder and delight of our natural world.

Magical Journeys

Magical Journeys

Christine Onward

Old Bar artist Christine Onward creates whimsical artworks inspired by her dreams and past experiences. Her paintings embody her passion for fantasy and story telling, and convey an extraordinary sense of optimism and sensibility.

“I take my childhood memories from Eastern Europe with me every time I paint. To them I add a bit of naive moods, sometimes folk art elements. With all these, the magic of all stories from the past suddenly comes to life”

Christine has a post-graduate degree in Psychology and a background in teaching. Apart from painting , her interests spread across a number of domains including nature photography, writing and artist media promotion.

Over the last years Christine engaged her efforts into creating and developing her own unmistakable artistic style. You will find Christine’s magical journeys not only in her canvas paintings but also in the rocks she paints:

“Rock painting is my most favourite thing to do. I started painting on rocks four years ago when the world around me seemed to fall apart and the therapeutic benefits of this are still felt to this day”

I paint to create magic. In painting, I connect myself with the true me, with the inner innocent voice of the child who still has a lot of stories from the past that need to be told.

I hope my art inspires everyone to take refuge, dream and create stories of their own:  stories of courage, hope, gratitude and above all, stories of love

Opening Event Saturday 5th February 12pm till 3pm, Entry is FREE booking required

Melding Dissonance

Melding Dissonance

Jo Ernst + Anke De Reuver

Anke de Reuver and Jo Ernst, two very different artists, explore the integratioin of old and new, nature and humanity.

Jo Ernst "I have long found solace in the companionship of the creek. Over the last few years we have been through a lot together. While sometimes quiet and still, and other times wildly distorting, the creek has survived devastation, remains exhilarating and beautiful, and is the primary inspiratin behind the collection of works for this exhibition".

Anke De Reuver "sees the potential of creativity in a diverse range of materials, transforming the mundane into exciting and often whimsical artworks. Her inspiration mostly comes from the environment - flora, fawna or the landscape. Her adage is 'Add a bat'".

Brushstrokes

Brushstrokes

Bronwyn Barton

Although my previous work life was finance/number based my artworks are perhaps surprisingly far more organic. Inspired by the natural sub-tropical bush where I live, my semi abstract artworks are a response to the positive and the negative shapes, the textures, lines, shadows and reflections I see around me. I love to wander and pick up debris and withered bark to keep as references. My phone is full of photos of plant forms from around my garden.

I am an intuitive painter who loves the luscious properties of paint and the expressive marks I can make not just with a brush but with whatever is at hand. My process is one of act and respond where experimentation is encouraged. I paint in layers and use different methods to reveal the underlying colour which provides a sense of both depth and spontaneity.

My aim is to create pieces that are striking from a distance but provide the viewer with so much more when they get in close.

Currently my artworks are held by Collectors both here in Australia and overseas.

2022 Pix From The Stix Entries

Scott Calvin.jpg

2022 Judge  Manning River Times photographer and former TAFE photography teacher, Scott Calvin. Before returning to his hometown of Taree, Scott worked in portrait studios, photographed weddings and snapped many magazine shoots. Since returning to the Manning around 30 years ago, he's been working for the Manning River Times. This has seen him take on a whole new range of photography, adding race-paced events and sport to his repertoire, snapping everything from footy matches to high-speed boat racing. His diverse experience is what drew the 2022 Pix from the Stix committee to look at inviting him to be a judge. When it comes to judging photography, it’s all about what instantly catches his attention. Perhaps it is telling him a story or perhaps it just gives him a feeling. For Scott, it’s not always about the most technically correct photograph but more about what has been captured within it. What he really liked about the 2022 Pix from the Stix format was his ability to judge the images digitally. It’s not about the quality of the printing or the size image, it purely about the photo that has been captured.
